Gutter guards are sold as a permanent end to gutter cleaning. In Minnesota they are better understood as a way to change how often you clean and what you are cleaning out.
What they actually solve
- Roof debris load. Oak tassels in spring, maple helicopters in early summer, and a heavy leaf drop in October. Guards keep the bulk of that out of the trough.
- Downspout clogs. This is the real win. A clogged downspout is what overflows a gutter onto a foundation.
- Climbing a ladder four times a year. Most homes with good guards drop to an annual check.
What they do not solve
- Ice dams. No guard prevents an ice dam. Dams are caused by heat escaping into the attic, melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. The fix is air sealing and attic insulation, not gutter hardware. Some heavy solid-top covers can actually make ice worse by giving it a wider surface to bridge.
