Deck repair and rebuilds
Minnesota decks fail in predictable places. If yours feels bouncy, the boards are soft, or the rail wobbles when you lean on it, get it looked at before someone gets hurt.
What we find most often
- Rotten ledger or missing flashing where the deck meets the house — the number one cause of deck collapses
- Loose or wobbly railings that no longer meet the 200 lb load requirement
- Heaved footings set above frost depth
- Soft, cupped, or splitting boards over sound framing (a resurface, not a rebuild)
- Rusted or under-spec fasteners, especially older hardware in contact with newer treated lumber
- Stairs with uneven rise or no handrail
What repairs run
| Job | Typical |
|---|---|
| Replace a few boards | $300 – $900 |
| Railing rebuild | $40 – $80 per ft |
| Resurface decking on existing frame | $18 – $40 per sq ft |
| Ledger and flashing repair | $800 – $2,500 |
| Re-support or replace footings | $400 – $1,200 each |
Repair or replace?
If the framing and footings are solid, resurfacing gets you a new deck for roughly half the price of a rebuild. If the ledger is rotted, the footings have heaved, or the structure was never permitted, replacement is the honest answer — and we will tell you which one you have.

FAQ
How do I know if my deck is unsafe?
Bouncy feel, a wobbly rail, soft wood you can push a screwdriver into, rust stains at the ledger, or gaps opening between the deck and the house. Any of those, stop using it and get it inspected.
Can you just replace the boards?
Yes, if the framing and footings are sound. That is the cheapest way to get a like-new deck.
How long does a repair take?
Most board and railing repairs are one to two days. Ledger and footing work runs longer and may need a permit.
